went out the other day to shoot a selfie and everything was so muddy from the days and days of rain we've been having that I couldn't find a suitable spot and had to adapt my original concept in order to create something from this outing. I think I can do this better so I may get a model and try again when it dries out a bit. :) I made another editing video! :D I've had many people approach me about my creative and editing process so I thought making some editing tutorials might be helpful. please check it out kindly subscribe~ the closing reception for my solo exhibition up atUrban Light Studiosall this past month is tonight so if you're in the area I hope you'll stop in to check it out~
blooded: the centuries old ritual of the Huntsman smearing fox blood onto the faces of the newly initiated hunt followers. the hunt begins when hounds are cast into rough or brushy areas called coverts, where foxes often lay up during daylight hours. If the pack manages to pick up the scent of a fox, they will track it for as long as they are able. the hunt continues until either the fox evades the hounds, goes to ground or is overtaken and usually killed by the hounds. firearms, foxes, hounds, horses, alcohol, aristocracy. sorry, I'm pulling for the little fox. side bit: I swear this one small bottle of red liquid makeup has helped me create so much art! seriously, you gotta get one of these. :)
I'm so pleased to invite you to my exhibition at Axis Gallery this October. my work will be up all month. if you are in Seattle I'd love to see/meet you at the art walk on thursday October 2nd!
in the last several months I've been seeking inspiration in
other various forms of art such as performance art, fashion and costume design,
and dance to name a few. my friend Ken suggested
I write down this name: Pina
Bausch. You should too. I found a copy of the film Pina by Wim
Wenders at the library and was amazed at what I saw. an incredible blend of theater and modern
dance. I was inspired to create this
image based on one of the pieces from the film where many chairs were being
stacked and also crawled through at the same time. I was very taken by the form of everything and
that at any moment the chairs could come tumbling down...
I've wanted to something Frida Kahlo inspired for a long time & I decided a self portrait would be an appropriate homage. I knew I wanted to have a cigar and smoke in the image and was inspired by the mystery created in this image. I braided my hair and arranged flowers in it and snapped away while learning to try and control the smoke. good god that thing tasted awful!! after I finally could take no more I found a good face shot and a good lower body shot from when I tilted the camera down a bit and put them together. from there it was just a matter of balancing and correcting, making each braid similar in size, giving more volume to the flowers, straightening out my uneven lips so the line of light down my face was all the more highlighted. and of course adding in a few hairs between my eyebrows. :) all in all this was a pretty complicated edit for a portrait shot with no obvious photoshopping. I'm quite happy with it. it came out nearly as perfect as it was in my head.
on a side note I have finally quit my day job to pursue art full time. YAY!!! I'm super excited and a tiny bit scared, but mostly thrilled and ready to begin this new phase of my career as an artist. got some big plans in the works so pleased stay tuned. I promise to try and thrill you on a regular basis~

lady lilac
one of my co-workers brought in two big bouquets of lilacs from his yard and I got to take them home. :D knowing they don't last too long once cut I just had to do a quick self portrait with them. plus I got a new wig I wanted to play with...
so much went into this shoot. it fell apart many times and in the end I had to be the model and have my team help me shoot it. but we got it done. thank you so much to my team, you ladies kick ass!
so long story short, I made this thing. I needed some sort of head piece for a shoot I just completed for interest and because I lost an opportunity to work with a great hair designer so I had to come up with something. I kind of dig it. sort of half flying saucer, half religious icon. ;)
